Winter Show 2025

This year’s winter climate has featured cold damp cloudy conditions which held back the flowering period for most plants, none the less, we were able to put on a good display which featured Cymbidium orchids.

The Grand Champion went to a ‘novelty’ Cymbidium, Cymbidium Arachnid, this large plant was also awarded Champion Specimen. The long racemes of very well displayed flowers in near perfect condition made an outstanding display, was grown by our President Jeff Knox.

Jeff, a very keen Cymbidium grower, also went on to take out the Champion Cymbidium over 90 mm with Cym. Papagee Ella x Dural Dream which was also the Champion Cymbidium seedling. This very large plant was very heavily flowered with large flushed flowers showing well clear of the foliage.

Jeff’s success didn’t end there, he presented a large Paphiopedilum Highland Beauty ‘Audre’ which was awarded Champion Paphiopedilum, the Champion Australian Native, Dendrobium Avril’s Gold ‘Pambula’ a deep yellow flower. His Cuitlauzina pulchella was chosen as Champion Species Orchid, its small well formed white flowers was quite an eye catcher.

There were of course other plants on display and Richard Skitt claimed Reserve Champion and Champion Orchid Any Other Genera with an outstanding Masdevallia Super Nova, its deeply coloured orange flowers stood out on the bench and attracted a lot of attention. The Cymbidium 60 -90 mm was awarded to his Cymbidium Druin Masterpiece ‘Renae’. He also took out Champion Seedling Other Than Cymbidium with Dendrobium Newbold ‘Stunning’ X Brimbank ‘Dark Knight’ whilst only very small this plant displayed the promise of something very good with its white petals and deep purple throat.

Roger and Angela Skitt presented the Champion Cymbidium under 60 mm with Cymbidium Sarah Jean Fund Cascade. Typical of the Sarah Jean type the pot was frilled with neatly cascading white flowers.

Keith Barrett‘s Phalaenopsis unknown, made up for not having a name by presenting a striking multi flowered plant with shapely white flowers spotted with deep purple. And being awarded Champion Phalaenopsis.

There were several interesting floral displays, and the Champion was awarded to Glenis Feltham. Her display included two very different types of Cymbidiums supported by just a trace of greenery in a well balanced display.

Congratulations to all winners, exhibitors, and helpers for putting on another great show.

Sapphire Coast Orchid Club would like to thank our Major Sponsors, Robert Smith Complete Furnishers of Pambula, The Bendigo Bank, Club Grants and The Little Bouquet Florist of Merimbula for their very generous support of our Shows.
