Winter Show 2023

Winter Show 2023 Results.
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club presented its 2023 Winter Orchid Show at Twyford Hall, Merimbula, from 11th to 13th August. Visitors were treated to a spectacular display of Cymbidium orchids which filled the hall with colour. A variety of other genera supported the Cymbidiums with some very good specimens.

Bob and Cheryle Watters’ Slipper Orchid, no stranger to the Champions bench, once again impressed the Judges. Their Paphiopedilum Nitens was not only judged Grand Champion but also Champion Paphiopedilum and Champion Specimen displaying its 18 perfect blooms evenly around the pot.

Reserve Champion and Champion Australian Native Dendrobium tetragonum was benched by President Jeff Knox. This small but spectacular plant displayed several bunches of very large pendant flowers. Jeff went on to win the 90+mm Cymbidium with a beautiful Cym Foxfire Amber x Dural Gold ‘Dural’ which had two spikes of large yellow with burnished red flowers. He also benched the 60-90mm Cymbidium, the unique Drouin Masterpiece ‘Kaleidoscope’ and the Champion Any Other Species with Cuitlauzina pulchella. These, along with his class results, made him a clear winner of the Winter Trophy.

Keith Barrett was not far behind Jeff, presenting the Champion Cymbidium under 60mm, My Sweet Amy, Champion Vandaceous, an unknown white Phalaenopsis, Champion Any Other Genera, Masdevallia Rein Touch ‘Beenak Beauty’, Champion Laeliinae Alliance Cattleya Mini Surprise “Llewelyn’ and Champion Fern and Foliage with a beautifully groomed Bromeliad vriesea ‘Jack’s Angel’.

The Champion Novice was taken out by R & A Skitt with an Australian Terrestrial Orchid, Chiloglottis truncata, a small flower but a very good job from new growers. Champion Cymbidium Seedling was benched by Merimbula Orchids, Cym. Lunar High x Dural Dream. Champion Seedling other than Cymbidium went to Jessica Goodall with her Dockrillia Saboteur. Helen Fraser continued her almost unchallenged role as the top Floral Art proponent in the Club with her very interesting piece featuring driftwood and Cym. Drouin Masterpiece ‘Kaleidoscope’ flowers.

Congratulations to all winners, exhibitors, and helpers for putting on another great show.
