Pambula Town Hall came alive with our Summer Show this year. Whilst the heroes of this show were always the Sarcochilus display but as the show has grown, they are being challenged by the Soft Canes and other species. All in all, some very striking orchids were on show which aroused considerable comment from our visitors.
The Sarcanthinae section was hotly contested but the Grand Champion and Champion Sarcanthinae Orchid was taken out by Les and Ruby Tudberry with an unknown Sarcochilus. This large plant displayed its large white flowers on 15 cascading racemes. The dark red spotted centres made these flowers stand out on the bench.
Champion Sarcanthinae Species was claimed by Keith Barrett with a very good example of Sarcochilus hartmanii. The pure white flowers had just a fine touch of red in the centre and made a nice display.
Champion Sarcanthinae Specimen was a very large plant displaying a broad cover of pale yellow flowers and was presented by Jeff Knox.
Champion Any Other Orchid was also presented by Jeff Knox his Softcane, Dendrobium Pink Doll ‘Magic’, was awarded Grand Champion Any Other Orchid and Champion Any Other Hybrid. This was a very large plant packed densely with predominantly pale pink flowers with a distinctive pale yellow lip making a very impressive display.
Champion Any Other Species was presented by Richard Skitt, an immaculate Dendrobium thrysiflorum with two perfect cascading racemes of pristine white flowers with the characteristic bright yellow labellum.
Champion Any Other Orchid Specimen was awarded to Graham and Helen Gray for their very impressive Masdevalia Falcon Sunrise ‘Beenak Orange’. The 15 almost perfect flowers with their deep orange colour set this plant aside.
Our up and coming Novice, Sue O’Brien’s, Sarcochilus Sweetheart x Racheal ‘Desire’ was awarded Champion Novice. Its large white flowers with their dappled red centre held on cascading racemes made quite an impressive sight.
The most successful club member was Keith Barrett.
