Our Spring Orchid Show was held in the Tathra Life Saving Club rooms on Tathra Beach. The venue provided a fabulous backdrop for a spectacular Show. The stunning display of Australian Dendrobiums backed up by a wide variety of Cymbidiums filed the room with colour and scent.
Grand Champion and Champion Australian Species or Hybrid was awarded to David Norman, with a Dendrobium speciosum, this plant had pristine pale yellow flowers immaculately displayed on a long raceme. David also presented the Champion Specimen, Dendrobium gracicaule X speciosum, an umbrella of small yellow flowers on this very large plant.
Reserve Champion was Bob Watters familiar Paphiopedilum Nitens, this immaculate plant was covered in pristine ‘slippers ’, it also took out the Champion Paphiopedilum.
Our up and coming Novice member, Sue O’Brien, was awarded Champion Novice for her Cattleya Hawaiian Beau x Laelia pumila. The perfect deep purple flower was a real standout on the bench.
Champion Cymbidium Over 90 mm, Cymbidium Lancashire Khan was benched by Kieth Barrett, who went on to claim Champion Laeliinae with Cattleya Mango Spice ‘Stone’, Champion Any Other Genera with Zygopetalum Kiwi Choice ‘Impressive’ X Zga. Kuitpo ‘Chris’. But this wasn’t the last he was also successful with his unnamed Phalaenopsis taking out the Champion Vandaceous Orchid and Champion exotic Species Orchid with Coelogyne parvulum!
Champion Cymbidium 60 -90 mm was Cymbidium Druin Masterpiece benched by Richard Skitt Who also was successful with Champion Seedling Other Than Cymbidium, Dendrobium Newbold ‘Stunning Beauty’ x Brimbank. Champion Cymbidium under 60, Cymbidium Marvin Gaye ‘Royale’ was awarded to Jeff Knox along with Champion Cymbidium Seedling for his very deep red unknown seedling.
There were some very interesting pieces in the Floral Art class, but it was taken out by Glenis Feltham with her ‘Long Low Pink’ display.
The Fern and Foliage class was taken out by Margaret Deighton with her Bromeliad.
The Overall Point Score winner was Keith Barrett with daylight second.
